Study Links Reduced Risk of COPD to Diet High In Soy Foods.

A previous study showed that a diet high in tofu, bean sprouts and other soy foods appears to be associated with reduced cholesterol levels. The research team involved decided to investigate if soy food consumption was associated with lung health.

The results seem to indicate a positive relation between soy food intake amongst a sample of Japanese men and women, and a reduced risk of COPD. It seems that those with COPD had a significantly lower intake of soy products. The team looked into variables such as demographics, lifestyle and food consumption habits, as well as undergoing lung function tests. On average the soy food consumption for those with COPD was lower than for those people without COPD.

All the participants completed questionnaires on demographics, lifestyle characteristics and habitual food consumption and also underwent lung function tests. The researchers found that average daily soy intake was significantly lower in the COPD patients.

One of the results was that the people who consumed higher amounts of soy foods had a greater lung function and the risk of respiratory problems was less. There was a significant reduction of 1% in the risk of breathlessness with each additional gram in daily intake. Even when taking into account of smoking, body mass index, alcohol consumption, these results were consistent.

Treatment has progressed considerably over the last few years - amongst other things, long term oxygen therapy is now available in the higher income countries with interesting advances in oxygen supply systems, especially oxygen concentrators and conserving devices.

A proactive preventive solution would be a revision on dietary and health related lifestyle. Organic and natural foods, including soy foods, high antioxidant intake, should be part of our daily diets.
