Must Have Oxygen: A Personal Reaction

In 2003 my step father had a very serious cancer related operation. It all went well on the cancer side of things but he nearly died in the period following surgery, and this was due to the breathing difficulties he had.

Since then he depends on a continuous (24/7) external oxygen supply.

We were all completely ignorant of what this implied both from the point of view of requirements and from that of the effects on his life style. After a few emergencies and constant research put immediately to practice, he now lives a nearly normal and active life.

He works a full day at his office, including extended meetings and visiting clients.

His, and my mother’s, social life is active as they receive and dine out regularly. Long weekends and vacations are an important part of their activities.

As I write this they are both on a five hour plane ride and after that they catch another for an additional three hour flight to Virginia.

Life with portable oxygen is not something you would wish for, but it doesn’t, or shouldn’t, limit your quality of life.
