New Life Style and External Oxygen Supply

Many people I am proud to call friends have generously shared some of their experiences and observations of living with an external oxygen supply. This series of posts pick up some of their testimonies with the aim to help others.

Part I

The actual shock of realizing you have to live the rest of your life depending on a hose that supplies oxygen to your lungs, usually appears after you leave the clinic or hospital.

Before that you have been told the news, have probably received pamphlets and information, but it really sinks in when you pick up your day to day living.

For many, close friends or family members, have organized things for the home coming. During this time you have been aware and know what is going on, but the moment that awareness and knowledge becomes reality is when you get home and you start living your new live.

The fact that for the rest of your life you will be hooked up to an oxygen machine stares you right in the face.

The good thing is that you begin hearing about, meeting and getting to know others in your situation.

Most of the pressure during the early stages is about the mechanics of the machines. You are very conscious of your oxygen supply.

You are beginning to get used to the hose, the way it hangs around the ears and feeds the nostrils.

What happens if you have a power failure or you run out of oxygen supply? These and other thoughts are on your mind.

During the first stage part of your focus will be on the logistics of your oxygen supply, but a another relates on how this will affect your lifestyle, specially when and how you will leave the house.
