Types Of Oxygen Delivery Systems
Posted by admin - 16/11/08 at 09:11 amThere are three different types of oxygen delivery systems produced by different companies and in different models.
- Oxygen Concentrators
- Liquid Oxygen Tanks
- Compressed Oxygen (Oxygen Cylinders)
- Oxygen concentrators extract oxygen from the surrounding air; they are powered by electricity. Portable alternatives have been developed in the last few years. There are various portable alternatives that are either battery powered or can be plugged in directly – some can be plugged into the cigarette lighter port in cars.
- Liquid oxygen tanks. Oxygen is kept as a liquid at a temperature of -170 degrees Celsius. In the lower part of the tank the liquid oxygen is kept, and a smaller area above is where the oxygen has evaporated into gas. A control valve is opened to supply oxygen to the patient when in use. The portable systems are refillable, which in turn requires a home storage reservoir unit.
- Oxygen Cylinders. (High-pressure cylinders) Cylinder that store oxygen as gas under pressure. These units are very heavy and should be handled by the oxygen provider. Also used as back ups. Today you can find small aluminum cylinders for portable use. There are various weights available although 8.5 lbs appears to be the most used one, followed by lighter weighing cylinders (down to 4lbs).
All these systems deliver oxygen through a nasal cannula or a mask. They all have oxygen flow regulators.
Defining the system to be used, or combination of oxygen supply systems, will depend on the diagnosis and prescription.
